Be More DJ Academy is a hands-on, project-based DJ education program designed for students in grades 5–8. Through the art and technology of DJing, students develop musical skills while applying mathematics, computational thinking, technology, communication, teamwork, leadership, and creative problem-solving in a real-world environment.

This isn't just about learning how to DJ.

It's about giving students a creative technology experience where they can learn by doing, solve problems, work together, and build something of their own.

THE PROGRAM

Be More DJ Academy is designed as a 12-week after-school program consisting of four two-hour sessions each week.

Students work in small collaborative groups using professional DJ equipment and software. Each student has repeated opportunities to practice skills, experiment, troubleshoot, receive feedback, and perform.

Students learn to:

Navigate DJ controllers, headphones, software, and audio equipment
Understand BPM, beats, bars, phrasing, and the downbeat
Cue and prepare tracks for mixing
Adjust tempo and synchronize music
Use faders, crossfaders, EQ, and effects
Build smooth transitions between songs
Explore scratching and turntable techniques
Select appropriate, clean music for a specific audience
Prepare and perform a DJ set

Maryland Standards Alignment

Be More DJ Academy is designed to complement Maryland’s learning standards by integrating music, technology, mathematics, creative expression, and collaborative problem-solving into an authentic, hands-on learning experience. Through DJing, students apply patterns, sequencing, timing, and quantitative reasoning; use technology to create, test, troubleshoot, and refine solutions; communicate creatively through music and digital tools; and collaborate with peers toward shared goals. The program provides meaningful opportunities for students to practice skills reflected in Maryland’s Fine Arts, Digital Learning, Mathematics, and interdisciplinary learning frameworks while developing confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Warm-Up
Review skills, concepts, and challenges from previous sessions.

Mini-Lesson & Demonstration
The instructor introduces a new concept or technique and demonstrates it using the DJ equipment.

Hands-On DJ Stations
Students practice the skill in small groups with instructor guidance.

Break & Reset

Challenge
Students apply the day's concept to a specific DJ task or creative problem.

Show, Listen & Reflect
Students share their work, receive feedback, identify challenges, and discuss what they learned.

This structure allows students to move repeatedly between instruction, practice, experimentation, feedback, and refinement.
